🍂 Your Pet's Autumn Health Checklist: 5 Things to Look Out For 🍂

As the leaves begin to fall and the temperatures drop, autumn is a lovely time to enjoy the outdoors with our pets. But the change in season is also a good opportunity to check in on their health and wellbeing.

You don't need any special equipment or veterinary knowledge. Just five minutes at home can help you spot small changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. Here are five simple things that our team here at Sleaford Vets recommends keeping an eye on this autumn.

1. Check for any new lumps, bumps or tender areas

Give your pet a gentle once-over, looking out for any new lumps, swelling or areas that seem uncomfortable when touched. While many lumps are harmless, it's always worth getting anything new or changing checked on.

2. Take a closer look at their paws 🐾

Autumn walks can mean muddy paws, wet grass and plenty of exploring! After a walk, take a moment to check between your pet's toes and around their paw pads for grass seeds, small cuts, redness or anything that might be causing irritation. If your pet is licking their paws more than usual or appears uncomfortable when walking, it's worth investigating.

3. Keep an eye out for fleas and itchy skin

Fleas can remain active throughout autumn, particularly in warm homes. Look out for excessive scratching, irritated skin or tiny dark specks in your pet's coat. Keeping up with appropriate parasite protection throughout the year can help keep your pet comfortable and protected.

4. Notice any changes in their usual behaviour

You know your pet better than anyone, which makes you the best person to spot when something isn't quite right. Have they been drinking more water than usual? Eating less? Sleeping more? Perhaps they've lost or gained weight, or aren't as enthusiastic about their usual walks. Even subtle changes can sometimes indicate an underlying health concern, so don't ignore anything that seems unusual.

5. Check their vaccinations and parasite protection

With the seasons changing, now is a great time to make sure your pet's preventative healthcare is up to date. Check when their next vaccinations are due and whether they're receiving suitable flea, tick and worming protection. If you're unsure what your pet needs, our team will be happy to advise.

Our pets can't always tell us when something is wrong, but taking a few minutes to check them over regularly can help us notice changes early.
