Post Operative Care for Rabbit and Small Furries

Rabbits and small furries are different to cats and dogs and therefore their aftercare following surgery is slightly different. These pets struggle to keep warm following anaesthesia/sedation so we advise to keep them indoors somewhere warm and draught free. Be careful not to make your pet too warm. Extra bedding should be provided for insulation. Your pet can usually be returned to their normal cage the following day unless otherwise instructed by the vet.

Feeding: It is very important that your pet has been eating both prior to and after surgery. This helps to keep the gut moving which is vital to their recovery. Your pet will have already been offered food at the surgery and this should be continued at home. If your pet will not eat their normal food, try to encourage them to eat their favourite foods such as fruits and vegetables. Ensure they have clean, fresh water available. If your pet refuses to eat we can supply a liquid recovery diet. The vet or nurse can demonstrate how to give this at home using a syringe.

Care of the Wound: Please check your pet’s wound daily. The wound should be kept clean and dry and there should not be any bleeding or discharge. We do not provide buster collars for rabbits and small furries but these pets must still be discouraged from licking or scratching their wounds as this can cause problems and delay healing.

Exercise: Following surgery it may be necessary to reduce the size of your pets run or cage to reduce their exercise. The vet will advise if this is necessary based on the procedure your pet has had.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your pet’s health please do not hesitate to contact the surgery.
